Innovative Mentoring Program Aimed at Connecting Teens

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better, it’s not.”
-Dr. Seuss

From the beginning, we have held fast to our belief that teens can recognize their full potential through volunteering and involvement in the community. So what better way to volunteer your time than by investing in younger students?

What Makes Us Unique:
Here at The McKenzie Noelle Wilson Foundation, we are so excited to have partnered up with Take Stock in Children to create an online peer-to-peer tutoring program. Beginning in 2012, this program was thoughtfully designed to connect middle school needs with high school students willing to help through consistent academic tutoring.

Because transportation can often be an obstacle in connecting older and younger students, IMPACT resolved this issue in the way the tutoring is 100% online. Through webcams and a virtual Blackboard, study time has become much more effective.

In addition, we have chosen that rather than seasoned adults, current high school students should act as tutors because of their fresher familiarity with academic concepts and material that middle school students are learning.

How This Works:
Once a week, high school volunteers in a computer lab join middle school students who use computers at McKenzie’s Academic Resource Center (MARC). With adult supervision, these students interact by online tutoring, helping with homework, and simplifying difficult concepts they may be learning. This after-school program has already proven to be a tremendous success with Bolles High School and Fletcher Middle School as Fletcher students found their grades increasing with the help of IMPACT.

Take Stock in Children

Take Stock in Children is a local nonprofit organization here in Jacksonville that works to bring kids hope for a better life. Their main way of helping consists of providing special volunteers to mentor and tutor children from middle school to high school, and ultimately through their transition to college.

Graciously enough, Take Stock in Children is also providing each middle school student currently enrolled in IMPACT the opportunity to receive a FULL college scholarship if they continue to receive tutoring throughout middle and high school.
